Parent Training

Parent training under IDEA is regulated in statutes where it states: (ii) Providing parents with information about child development; and (iii) Helping parents to acquire the necessary skills that will allow them to support the implementation of their child’s IEP or IFSP. Further, the IDEA defines related service counseling as follows: (2) Counseling services means services provided by qualified social workers, psychologists, guidance counselors, or other qualified personnel. Ideas for Parent IEP Training can be defined as follows:

  1. Training on how to use AT devices.

  2. Training on software or computer programs that child needs–anything that Parents don’t understand, Study Island, Schoology, Nearpod, etc.

  3. Implementing behavior modification techniques at home, particularly ABA.

  4. Data collection-learn how the team collects data so that Parent can understand it.

  5. Reinforcing whatever reading curriculum is being used; reinforcing reading skills.

  6. Any part of your child’s supports, services, or eligibility category that Parent do not understand.

  7. Transition time–either preschool to kindergarten or the teenage transition time.

  8. Postsecondary options like OVR, workplace training, 13th years, etc.

  9. Explanations on vocational options if Parent’s child is pursuing that instead of the traditional college route.

  10. Any practice, exercises or routines that Parent’s child does at school that Parent needs to reinforce at home.
