How to Prepare an IEP

Dear Parents:

Please find below some links to websites which have useful tips about IEP meetings. Please keep in mind that an IEP meeting lasts 45-60 minutes, and most of the time is consumed by the reports. At the end of the meeting, you have 5-10 minutes for your questions and concerns.

I recommend that you discuss your goals and your concerns in detail with an advocate before the IEP meeting. An advocate who is experienced in special education can assist you during the IEP meetings.

Also, it’s not recommended for attorneys to participate in IEP meetings. Therefore, I won’t be with you at the IEP meeting.

Finally, if you feel your concerns have not been heard at the IEP meeting, do not orally agree to the team’s offer of FAPE before you have spoken with the advocate or legal counsel.

Sincerely, RB
